Mike Purcell WelcomeWelcome

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for visiting our website. My family as well as many others have been touched by the effects of cancer. My husband, Michael appeared to be a healthy 53 year old man. He was a physical education teacher at Washingtonville Middle School, coaching college baseball at Mount St. Mary College and also a member of the coaching staff for the Newburgh Nuclears American Legion Baseball at the time of his diagnosis.

My children and I organized the memorial race in Mike's memory which is held each year on the first Sunday in November (Pancreatic Cancer Month) to raise funds for the Lustgarten Foundation for pancreatic cancer research and early detection testing. With the help of a small group of family and close friends we continue to try to make a difference. To date we have raised approximately $28,000.00. It is a small community event held to raise funds and awareness for this dreadful disease. Mike dedicated his life to helping others; it is the hope of myself and my children that we keep that spirit alive through his memorial race.

It is estimated that 37,680 cases of pancreatic cancer will be diagnosed in 2010 and estimated that 34,290 people will loss the battle. It is the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths overall. Difficultly in diagnosing pancreatic cancer combined with its resistance to standard treatment makes it one of the most challenging cancers to treat. Early detection is the only hope in increasing the survival rate of this cancer.

In closing, I would like to thank you again, your support is truly appreciated.
